Founded in 2016 at the University of Colorado, the Ajax Quartet is an emerging string quartet comprised of violinists Tom Yaron and Renee Hemsing Patten, violist Mario Rivera, and cellist Eric Haugen. Its members have performed in various constellations at such institutions as the Aspen Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival, Moritzburg Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Dallas Chamber Symphony, University of Michigan, Schwob School of Music, and the Juilliard School.
Only months after its founding in Fall of 2016, Ajax was selected by the Grammy award-winning Takacs Quartet for the prestigious graduate string quartet residency at the University of Colorado. Ajax shares a relationship with the Aspen Music Festival and School, where they serve as Musical Connections Resident Artists. The Ajax Quartet has thrilled audiences at home in Colorado, as well as in California and Washington as part of the Apollo Arts and Concerts in the Barn concert series. Tour highlights from the 2017-18 season include a program at the Finnish Embassy in Washington DC celebrating the centennial of Finnish Independence and a tour to the United Kingdom with engagements in London, Cambridge, and Oxford.
As the graduate quartet in residence at the University of Colorado, the group enjoys weekly coaching and guidance from the Takacs Quartet and carries out their own coaching and playing responsibilities throughout the College of Music.
